Granny Smith Investigates The little old lady who solves crime eBook G M Dobbs

I enjoy when an author successfully takes on an established genre -- the British village cozy mystery in this case -- and gives it a twist. consider that Agatha Christie's Miss Marple was probably born in the 1860s. Granny Smith was born in the 1950s and was a teenager in the 1960s. Granny Smith answers the question how might Miss Marple have turned out had she matured with the societal changes that occurred during that period. Given that I am older than Granny Smith, it is something that resonates with me. Dobbs has said that he hadn't read many cozies before he wrote Granny Smith Investigates but he hits the tropes we are familiar with from Agatha Christie's stories and does it with a broad humor that makes it a fun read. A second Granny Smith novel is due out later this year and I'm looking forward to it.

The story takes place in Wales, not far from the setting of Gary's The Rhondda Ripper (revised edition).

Granny Smith Investigates The little old lady who solves crime eBook G M Dobbs Reviews

Granny Smith -- a pipe-smoking senior citizen who listens to heavy metal and can't keep her nose out of other peoples' affairs. I fell in love with this character within the first couple of pages. The story never drags and the secondary characters, such as Granny's quirky son and submissive husband, are just as lovable as Granny herself.
A delightful story with an unpredictable plot, unremarkable characters, unrealistic happenings that combine for an engaging lighthearted read. Granny Smith, named after the apple convincingly morphs into "Miss Marple on steroids".
A few formatting errors in the early kindle edition are noted but they did not spoil an otherwise thoroughly enjoyable book.
Delightful, crabby but friendly, Granny Smith sets out to discover who killed her next door neighbor. A fun story, everyone who loves Miss Marple or the TV show Murder, She Wrote, will enjoy.
This was the first I've read this author and if others are as good, it won't be the last.

I loved it from the beginning. The way that Granny Smith got her "nickname", the pipe....you name it. She was not only an unusual character, but one that you'd never expect to find doing the things she did. The book was funny, interesting, fairly well written and made me want more. Definitely a hit with me. I recommend it highly for those who like a humorous mystery. Great!!
A great little mystery with amusing characters and situations, and a main character very much in the vein of Rutherford's version of Miss Marple (an interpretation that I would ALSO call "Miss Marple on steroids").

The book reads well but still has some typos in this revised edition. For example, someone is told to "clam down, or you'll have a heart attack". Unless that is British or Welsh slang I expect it should be "calm down." Another person repeatedly grabs for a "medicine veil", which I expect should be a vial. I also prefer books that are not double-spaced, but that's just my preference.

I look forward to reading the next one. I have to say to D.M. Dobbs--good job!
It had been a while since I have read the likes of the character Miss Marple from Agatha Christie works. Now Granny Smith has fulfilled that void in my reading life. Granny Smith is not exactly old to be a Granny by heart but irrespective of that, everyone has been calling her Granny. She is a young at heart woman who has a trait to be curious about everything that is happening around her. So when her friend Sheila gets engaged to Nigel, who is younger than her, Granny Smith gets suspicious. The following murder in the town makes Granny even more curious and on she follows the clues of the murder, much to the chagrin of Detective Inspector Miskins.

The story then follows Granny Alice Mary Smith into various stages of the mystery in a humorous but intense way. The book is beautifully written and is a pleasure to read. The Miss Marple references are not only in our mind but the author has given in the book too, calling Granny Smith as “Miss Marple on steroids”

It is a cozy and wonderful murder mystery, the likes of which, I have not read for a long time. Agatha Christie story lovers must catch this book. It brings back many memories of age old murder mystery classics.
I had a fine time reading this cozy mystery. I read Christie, and others of the same ilk, quite a lot in my younger days. Not so much in the last thirty or so. But I'm quite fond of the author's writing and have come to expect entertaining stuff whatever genre he tackles.

I wasn't disappointed this time around either.

A police inspector calls Granny Smith "Miss Marple of steroids" a couple of times in the book. Apt. Miss Marple was the prim proper lady of her times as granny is a woman of hers. Pipe-smoking, heavy metal listening, I didn't find that at all unusual. I'm of the same age myself and i still listen to hard rock and metal. It was the stuff I grew up with and the stuff I'll likely be listening to on the last day of my life.

A friend of Granny's(she gets the nickname from her love of the apple of the same name even though she is a grandmother and Smith is her married name) is found murdered and the police suspect the husband. They'd been seen arguing at the festival shortly before she was last seen and a few hours before the body turns up. Granny finds the idea of the husband as a murderer completely abhorrent and sets out in true amateur detective fashion to find the real murderer.

Highly recommended.
